Best boat security systems for 2020
11/17/2020

Thefts of marine electronics, mostly expensive multifunction displays, are all too common. The thieves’ typical M.O. is slipping into marinas late at night and ripping the equipment out of dashboards or consoles. They’ve also broken into stack storage buildings and removed electronics and other equipment. Less often the bad guys steal an entire boat. Despite security systems at marinas and storage facilities, the boats are sitting ducks for crooks bent on getting in and out quickly. But that doesn’t mean you have to leave your boat defenseless. Below are several security devices and systems that can help.

Vessel monitoring devices is one of 19 categories of products that we describe in our annual lineup called the Best & Brightest Boating Electronics. The category is broken down into multifunction, engine/electrical/fuel, safety and security devices. In listing the equipment, we ask manufacturers to tell us which model in these 19 categories they consider to be their best—not necessarily the most advanced or latest but the one than delivers the highest marks overall. That could be their most popular model or the one that has passed the test of time. Categories range from autopilots and radars to fishfinders and communications electronics. Two weeks ago we rolled out the best multifunction monitors.

Nautic Alert VTracker

Nautic Alert’s award-winning VTracker and new mobile app provide an extremely simple way to install and use global tracking, security, and a monitoring insurance-compliant solution in a compact energy-efficient design that is ideal for center consoles and similar boats with limited power and physical storage. VTracker provides reliable two-way verifiable global satellite communications for 50-75% less data costs than other two-way satellite trackers. VTracker can be covertly installed by OEMs or refits and only requires battery power and antenna connections in a minimal configuration, or can easily be expanded with security and bilge monitoring options.

IRIS-S460

Having manufactured marine cameras since 2003, IRIS is evolving their product range to provide exceptionally tough camera housings by using corrosion-proof marine grade 316 stainless steel and manufacturing processes that enable it to deliver high-end solutions at very affordable prices. The new IRIS-S460 is a 2MP HD miniature, fixed-IP dome camera that is plug-and-play compatible with Raymarine, Axiom and Furuno chartplotters with further integration in the pipeline. The IRIS-S460 is available in a range of lens options and features built-in infrared illumination and is ideal for deck and engine room monitoring, onboard security and as an extremely robust, corrosion-proof back up and docking camera.

GOST Apparition XVR IDP

The GOST Apparition is the ultimate vessel security, monitoring, and crew management system. The Apparition includes a 7-inch touchscreen GOST Apparition Interactive display and main control panel and is fully compatible with the full line of GOST wireless security sensors for hatches, doors, and storage lockers as well as wireless relays for siren, light, and strobe triggers. The GOST XVR provides real time storage and streaming to owners and crew smartphones remotely for complete situational awareness. Additionally, it comes complete with the Nav-tracker IDP antenna for near real-time geostationary satellite communication of all events.

KJM C70

Built for the demanding marine environment and waterproof to the IP66 standard, the C70 is ideal for mid to large recreational boats as well as commercial vessels. At night, the C70 uses 48 infrared LEDs to penetrate up to 100 feet away. Manual focus and zoom lens allows the C70’s field of view to be adjusted for custom installations. When connected to a compatible MFD, monitor or chartplotter, the C70 on-screen menus can be used to select normal or reverse image. The flexible mounting configuration—10- to 90-degree tilt and 360-degree rotation—allows the C70 to be used in most applications on board.

Maretron VDR100

Maretron’s VDR100 provides a complete record of all information produced by electronics connected to the vessel’s NMEA 2000 network—ideal for performance analysis, vessel tracking, preventive maintenance, network diagnostics, warranty incident, and accident investigation. Each message is stored using solid-state memory technology with simple data retrieval via a removable 16GB USB flash drive (supplied) that will hold weeks or more of data, easily exported with the free N2KExtractor. Using a circular buffer, the oldest data is overwritten only after the entire memory is filled to protect against loss of your most recent data. A year or more of data can be stored by purchasing a larger USB flash drive. Engineered to IEC 60945 standards, data is safely protected in a compact waterproof housing.
